Mirrors are incredibly versatile accents in a home. They can be used to fill up space on a blank wall, to make a small space feel bigger, as statement pieces with unique frames or other decorative details, and more. However, there’s a time and place to use mirrors—or rather, there are places where it makes sense to hang a mirror and other places where it doesn’t. Here are several pieces of advice for where you should and shouldn’t place mirrors in your home.
Three Places to Hang Mirrors
- Entryways – Your entryway is one of the best places in your home to hang a mirror purely for practical reasons. It gives everyone an opportunity to check how they look before heading out of the house. Plus, it can brighten up dim entryways by reflecting light.
- Hallways – Hallways can be difficult spaces to decorate. After all, what do you put in a space where people hardly spend any time? A mirror at the end of the hallway can be a beautiful focal point that opens up the space and creates depth.
- Above Fireplace – A mirror above your fireplace creates an elegant look and reflects the beauty of your living space. It’s also a more sophisticated alternative to the trend of having a TV above the mantel.
Two Places to Avoid Hanging Mirrors
- Across from or Above Bed – A mirror across from your bed can make it difficult to sleep peacefully. You might startle yourself when you see yourself in the mirror or because you thought you saw something else in the mirror. Meanwhile a mirror above the bed is not only a no-no in feng shui but doesn’t make practical sense and could be dangerous since it could fall on you.
- Opposite an East- or West-Facing Window – While mirrors are useful for reflecting light in darker spaces, placing them across from an east- or west-facing window could create uncomfortable glare.
