Headboards are primarily decorative and have much to offer a bedroom aesthetically. They can be made of wood for a classic look, or metal, which complements many different design styles. There are also upholstered headboards, which offer even more options in terms of style, color, pattern, and texture.
Whether a headboard is right for your space is a matter of preference. No one truly needs a headboard and it isn’t functional in the way that other furniture pieces are; however, there are still many benefits of headboards that may be worth your consideration:
- It’s easier to sit up with a headboard. If you want to sit up in a bed, the lack of a headboard means you’re sitting up against the wall, which isn’t very comfortable. A cushioned headboard in particular offers you some support.
- It’s easier for your pillows to remain upright. When you make your bed, having no headboard means the pillows either sit flat on top of the bed or against the wall, neither of which are particularly aesthetically pleasing. A headboard makes your pillows look better by keeping them standing up and keeping them from falling between the bed and the wall.
- Headboards can protect your walls. Headboards can protect the walls behind beds from scuffs, scratches, and oil stains that might occur as pillows come into contact with the wall.
- They offer insulation. Headboards help to insulate you from sound and cold drafts, helping you to sleep more soundly.
